Here’s what to know about bed bugs and animals, including your dog or cat:
Bed bugs are not as dangerous for your cat or dog as other pests are. People are their preferred pest! While rare, it’s important to inspect your home for pests if you notice bites on your pet. Look for shed bed bug exoskeletons near or in their bedding. Look for live signs of bed bugs, as well, often around the seams of bedding or on tags. If you find evidence, or are not sure if the bites are from fleas or bed bugs, it’s best to contact an exterminator to examine your property.

This is very unlikely. Bed bugs are not adapted to live outdoors, making it unlikely for your pet to get them on their bodies outdoors. If your neighbor has bed bugs, you don’t need to worry about your dog picking them up on your daily walk or in your backyard. Bed bugs spread from one property to another by hitching a ride on purses, suitcases, or more. It’s not likely they will hitch a ride on your cat or dog!
Bed bugs may rarely infest pets, but they will certainly infest your pet’s bedding! Just as you would with your bedding, take care in washing the items in a hot washing machine, and drying with heat. This can remove any bed bugs or eggs in your pet’s bedding. In any case, it’s best to get a bed bug exterminator to completely remove an infestation. You will likely have to remove your pet from the premises when a professional treats your property for bed bugs. In addition, it’s important to follow instructions from your exterminator when introducing pets back into your home post-treatment.
