There are a lot of myths about the link between bed bugs and disease. While there is no proof, people have suggested that bed bugs are responsible for transmitting some of the following diseases:
Yes and no. Even though bed bugs do not transmit disease with their bites, they can harbor human pathogens. In fact, more than 45 bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and more pathogens have been found in bedbugs. Thankfully, these microbes do not reproduce or multiply in or on the bed bugs. The good news is that you don’t need to worry about getting a disease from bed bugs. However, there are still a couple of risks associated with bed bugs, especially when you have an infestation. The most concerning thing about bed bugs is, of course, their bites.
Bed bugs usually heal on their own with time, but there is still a risk of the bites becoming infected. Especially if bites are irritated or scratched at, blister-like welts can form. This can lead to secondary skin infections. Some people have been known to form allergic reactions from bed bug problems. If you experience more severe reactions to a bed bug bite, immediately seek medical attention.
Thankfully, bed bugs do not transmit dangerous diseases as some other pests do. The main concern with an infestation is when their bites cause itching and loss of sleep. When you have these pests, act quickly by enlisting the help of a bed bug control expert who can protect you from the frustrations of an infestation.
