Fall Pests Are Coming - Are You Ready?
Every year, like clockwork, a category of pest tries to get into homes in Knoxville and throughout Eastern Tennessee. Some call them overwintering pests. Some call them fall pests. Some just call them frustrating. Perhaps you've seen some of these bugs. Do you have a yearly invasion of kudzu bugs, ladybugs, or stink bugs? It wouldn't be surprising. These three are the fall pests we see the most.
This is an insect that needs no introduction. Not only are ladybugs visually distinct, they are plentiful. When they appear in gardens and in crop fields, they are mostly a benefit, feeding on aphids and other crop-destroying organisms. But, when they get into homes, they quickly take on a pest status. They congregate on screens and exterior walls, and leave a viscous, foul-smelling yellow fluid that can cause items to become stained.
This is a new pest threat in the United States. Experts believe they came by plane from Asia to Atlanta, GA, appearing in 2009 on the sunny side of northeastern Georgia homes. But, these tiny brown bugs were not content to stay in Georgia. They quickly started spreading to the north and the west, and have found their way to Tennessee. Some consider these to be beneficial insects as they may help to control the spread of a kudzu root, which is an invasive plant in the United States. But, if they begin to target soybean plants, they could quickly turn into another frustrating crop pest. At the moment, kudzu bugs have securely established themselves as frustrating household pests, and it is likely that they will fit right in with all of the other common fall pests on this list.
These shield-shaped tan bugs have made quite an impression since their introduction to the United States at the end of the 1990s. Stink bugs are a frustration for crop growers and homeowners alike. They are unsightly when they congregate on exterior walls during the fall, and frustrating when they get inside. As their name implies, these insects have an unpleasant odor.
Why Do Fall Pests Come Inside?
If you have any of these bugs invading your home, it is important to understand why they are coming in. Unlike other common household pests that enter homes all year long, fall pests don't enter homes to find food--at least not specifically. They come inside to escape the coming cold of winter. That means you can't cause them to leave by keeping your food in sealed containers, or by keeping your home clean. The only way to exclude these pests is to create a barrier.
