Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are the most common of the bloodsucking insects that annoy people and pets. Some species are annoying in the daytime, though most mosquitoes like to feed off people in the evening. Mosquitoes can transfer many diseases that could be harmful to us. These diseases include West Nile virus, malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, encephalitis, and others. Even our dogs can develop heartworm from the bite of the mosquito.

Both the male and female feed on nectar and plant juices. The female mosquito also requires a blood meal before she can lay her eggs.

Did you know they have four distinct stages in their life cycle? The egg, larva, pupa and adult stages take about 7 to 10 days for mosquitoes to complete their life cycle during the summer months. Mosquito larvae and pupae may be found in a variety of breeding places: floodwaters, ditches, storm-sewer catch basins, tree holes, rain barrels, discarded automobile tires, and, in practically, all types of containers.

You can reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home by simply eliminating places where they lay their eggs. Here are some simple steps for reduction:

  1. Eliminate open containers which can fill with water
  2. Properly dispose of discarded tires
  3. Empty bird baths and fill with fresh water at least twice a week
  4. Check and clean clogged roof gutters at least twice a year so they’ll drain properly
  5. Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use
  6. Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property
  7. Tightly cover wells, septic tanks, cisterns, and cesspools
  8. Tarp boats and canoes or turn them over

Simple tips to prevent mosquito bites:

  1. Wear light-colored clothing, long-sleeved shirts or jackets, and slacks
  2. Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened structure
  3. Avoid physical exertion
  4. Use colognes and perfumes sparingly
  5. The National Pest Management Association suggests using an insect repellent containing DEET on exposed skin. Be sure to read and follow label directions.
